TIME 2000 Freshmen Discuss Motivation for Learning at the Louis Armstrong Middle School

Throughout the fall semester, TIME 2000 freshmen enrolled in the Psychology of Learning Mathematics course, visited the Louis Armstrong Middle School, East Elmhurst, to fulfill fieldwork requirements. For ten weeks, they had the opportunity to have a pre-lesson discussion with Ms. Merna Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher, observe her teach a lesson, and then, participate in a debriefing of the lesson with her. The last session, on Monday, 15 December, focused on motivation for learning mathematics.

TIME 2000 Class of 2004 Graduates

On Thursday, 3 June, the third cohort of TIME 2000 graduated.

TIME 2000 Seniors Receive Graduation Awards

On Wednesday, 2 June 2004, graduating seniors received recognition for their academic achievements. Tova Babakhanov, Wen Yu (Sara) Liu, and Maryann Sadera received FREE Foundation scholarships to continue their graduate studies at Queens College. Wen Yu (Sara) Liu also received the Herbert Fremont Award for outstanding undergraduate work in secondary mathematics education.

TIME 2000 Junior Receives Two Mathematics Awards

On Monday, 17 May, TIME 2000 Junior, Rebecca Steiner, received two awards from the Queens College Mathematics Department: The Most Outstanding Junior Math Major ,and The Budne Prize. Congratulations, Rebecca!

Class of 2004 Ready to Graduate

On Wednesday, 12 May 2004, eight TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the third TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Queens College Patio Room. More than 50 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them and view their dynamic PowerPoint yearbook, cleverly presented based on the theme of “Friends.” The seniors received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program; Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator; and Ms. Vidya Sriprasad, outgoing President of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

NEW OFFICERS ELECTED FOR MT4

At the April seminar, the TIME 2000 students elected the new officers for the Tutoring Club. The new officers are Mamadou Diallo, President; Rachel Faranak Eghbali, Vice President; Kevin (Chun Kai) Huang, Treasurer; May (Yan Mei) Guo, Secretary. Congratulations!

CYBERCHASE FEATURED AT A SEMINAR

At the April seminar, Mr. Chris Czajka, Associate Director of the National Teacher Training Institute, enacted a lesson plan integrating a Cyberchase episode entitled, "Snow Day to Be Exact," illustrating ways to develop estimation concepts across the grades. This presentation was a continuation of the seminar on 16 March 2004.

TIME 2000 Tutors at the Dedication of Powdermaker Hall

On Friday, 23 April 2004, the home of the Division of Education and the TIME 2000 office, Powdermaker Hall, was dedicated. One of the special classroom demonstrations was planned and conducted by members of Today’s Tutors, Tomorrow’s Math Teachers, the TIME 2000 Tutoring Club. Eighth graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School, East Elmhurst, NY, were guest participants at the session which included problem-solving practice for the New York State Grade 8 Assessment, and a game session, “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” to reinforce their mathematical skills. The tutoring event was coordinated by the Tutoring Club President, Vidya Spriprasad.

TIME 2000 Grads Speak at NCTM

On Thursday, 22 April 2004, four TIME 2000 graduates, Mr. John Chae, Mr. Eric Glatz, Ms. Rocío Saborido, and Ms. Irina Zavurov, were on the program of the 82nd Annual Meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The title of their session was “Creating PowerPoint Lessons that Engage Secondary Mathematics Students."(Click on “handout” to download the handout distributed at the session, “slideshow” to view and download the entire presentation, and “Manual” to download the “Basic PowerPoint Manual, created by R. Saborido.)

ISA Recruiters Visit Queens College

On Tuesday evening, 20 April, recruiters from the Institute for Student Achievement (ISA), a privately funded enterprise established through the generosity of the Leeds Foundation to provide teachers and students with support to ensure academic success, visited Queens College to introduce TIME 2000 students to the philosophy, goals, and mission of ISA, and to recruit teacher candidates.
